The role of eye gaze & blinks in ASL: The eyes have it!

When signing, where should you be gazing? Do you look at the other person constantly, or is it okay to look away? How do you know when a signer is providing information or narration vs. a characterization? Absent a signed referent and obvious body shift, how can you tell when one characterization ends and another begins? Answers to all of these questions (and more) can be found in the often-overlooked topic of eye gaze and eye blinks. This workshop will provide a look at different types of gaze and blink behaviors in American Sign Language. Eye gaze and blinks will be demonstrated with video examples, categorized, and defined with the latest research available. Video demonstrations of Deaf signers using eye behaviors in context will be shown to reinforce the presented materials. Regardless of your level of fluency in ASL, this workshop can dramatically impact your work. You’ll never look at the eyes in the same way again!

Topics we will cover…

  • Identify three types of eye gaze used in ASL narratives
  • Utilize effective ASL eye gaze strategies for conversation regulation
  • Differentiate periodic and voluntary eye blinks
  • Identify utterance boundaries as marked with eye blink behaviors

Interpreting educational numbers: Percent, place, position—math & science numbers

How do you correctly convey the following in ASL: “Look at page 4 and do the four problems there. The fourth problem coverts 4% to the decimal 0.04.” Those statements contain five different categories of numbers in ASL, only one of which is produced with the palm facing outward! While English is relatively straightforward with only two types of numbers, ASL has more than two dozen different categories including order, quantifiers, and nominals. While many systems are familiar, interpreters can struggle with knowing which system to use. This is especially true with some of the more unique systems. Expressing ASL numbers incorrectly can make an interpreted message difficult for Deaf viewers to understand. Using signed video texts, participants will learn to recognize and interpret educationally-related numbering systems in ASL while also developing skill in articulating numbers accurately.

Topics we will cover…

  • Identify specific educationally-related numbering systems in ASL
  • Accurately articulate numbers in each system
  • Appropriately use the systems in ASL texts
